چکیده
W review the past year in this issue’s “From the Editors” column, which is coauthored with Managing Editor Kelly M. Kophazi, then we preview this issue’s five research articles. Our first article, by Naraphorn Haphuriwat, Vicki M. Bier, and Henry H. Willis, is on “Deterring the Smuggling of Nuclear Weapons in Container Freight Through Detection and Retaliation.” Next, Ali E. Abbas presents a method for “Decomposing the Cross Derivatives of a Multiattribute Utility Function into Risk Attitude and Value.” The next two articles contain methods for determining probabilities. In our third article, Robert F. Bordley develops a method for “Using Bayes’ Rule to Update an Event’s Probabilities Based on the Outcomes of Partially Similar Events.” Next, a method for “Aggregating Large Sets of Probabilistic Forecasts by Weighted Coherent Adjustment” is developed by Guanchun Wang, Sanjeev R. Kulkarni, H. Vincent Poor, and Daniel N. Osherson. The final article is by Xiting Yang, Joseph B. Kadane, Heidi M. Crane, and Mari M. Kitahata on “Whether to Retest the Lipids of HIV-Infected Patients: How Much Does Fasting Bias Matter?”

Directional Decomposition of Multiattribute Utility Functions
Several schemes have been proposed for compactly representing multiattribute utility functions, yet none seems to achieve the level of success achieved by Bayesian and Markov models for probability distributions. In an attempt to bridge the gap, we propose a new representation for utility functions which follows its probabilistic analog to a greater extent. Starting from a simple definition of ...
متن کاملBayesian in spirit, which shifts attention from the updating of probability distributions via Bayes' rule, a filtering operation on transitional probability
Probability updating via Bayes' rule often entails extensive informational and computational requirements. In consequence, relatively few practical applications of Bayesian adaptive control techniques have been attempted. This paper discusses an alternative approach to adaptive control, Bayesian in spirit, which shifts attention from the updating of probability distributions via transitional pr...
متن کاملCesaltina Pacheco Pires a Rule for Updating Ambiguous Beliefs
When preferences are such that there is no unique additive prior, the issue of which updating rule to use is of extreme importance. This paper presents an axiomatization of the rule which requires updating of all the priors by Bayes rule. The decision maker has conditional preferences over acts. It is assumed that preferences over acts conditional on eventE happening, do not depend on lotteries...
متن کاملFrom the Editors - Probability Scoring Rules, Ambiguity, Multiattribute Terrorist Utility, and Sensitivity Analysis
T issue’s “From the Editors” column is coauthored with all the associate editors, to emphasize their major role in the leadership of the journal. We first review this year’s operations and thank our editorial board and referees. Our first article, by David J. Johnstone, Victor Richmond R. Jose, and Robert L. Winkler, presents “Tailored Scoring Rules for Probabilities,” which take into account t...
متن کاملBayes Networks and Fault Tree Analysis Application in Reliability Estimation (Case Study: Automatic Water Sprinkler System)
In this study, the application of Bayes networks and fault tree analysis in reliability estimation have been investigated. Fault tree analysis is one of the most widely used methods for estimating reliability. In recent years, a method called "Bayes Network" has been used, which is a dynamic method, and information about the probable failure of the system components will be updated according to...
